Discussion continued regarding the needs of the Primary Care Practices – How to limit patient access and which patient populations should have access.
· It was agreed that our Primary Care Practices wish to continue to provide pre-op consults and second opinions.
· It was agreed that Primary Care does not wish to be in a position to turn away referrals from colleague physicians, but it will be necessary to educate our faculty to the constraints of the our Primary Care practices so they can use judgment in referring patients for long term to our primary care physicians.
· We need a process for referring patients from specialty medicine to primary care. (i.e. the referring physician or his designee may require direct involvement with the referral.)
The Task Force discussed closing the practice to the following patient populations:
· Friends of employees
· “Cold-calls” and self-referrals
· Referrals from current patients
The Task Force discussed the need to “close” our General Internal Medicine practice to the managed care companies and accept future patients by exception only.
It was agreed we would need to educate both faculty and employees.
Julie Landesberg will ask Lynelle Burt in HR Benefits to provide us with the final insurance plan options for employees. Judye Gremm can assist in educating employees.
Carol Key was asked to draft a script to be used by the SAO Office for calls requesting primary care referrals for non-SAO patients.
