Introduction

Since its formation in 1943, Southwestern Medical School has grown from a small wartime medical college into the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, a multi-faceted academic institution of nationally recognized excellence in the education of physicians, biomedical scientists, and health care personnel. Its component institutions include Southwestern Medical School, Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and the Southwestern Allied Health Sciences School. UT Southwestern is currently in the midst of a dramatic expansion of its physical facilities with construction and development projects scheduled for years to come. The campus includes 8.3 million square feet of building space with another 582,000 square feet under construction or in design and four teaching hospitals. There are now more than 1490 full-time faculty, including four Nobel Laureates and seventeen members of the National Academy of Sciences, as well as 925 medical students, over 1200 clinical residents, 695 biomedical science students, and 1,112 postdoctoral fellows in training. UT Southwestern is dedicated to the education of physicians who are thoroughly grounded in the scientific basis of modern medicine, who are inspired to maintain lifelong medical scholarship, and who will care for patients in a responsible and compassionate manner.

The Department of Radiology is chaired by Robert W. Parkey, M.D., who has led the department for over 30 years and is the longest sitting chairman on the UT Southwestern campus. The department is a dynamic and innovative department committed to remaining in the forefront of new developments and clinical applications in today's rapidly changing field of medical imaging. Our expanding facilities and programs, supported by our excellent basic science and research divisions, enable us to offer unique and varied learning opportunities to residents and fellows in radiology. The training programs are designed to obtain the maximum benefit from the high volume of cases and from the broad range of pathology encountered at the various teaching hospitals affiliated with the program.
