The Division of Mineral Metabolism maintains a very active and very broad research base.  The focus is in two basic areas, stones and bones.  Throughout the past 30 years, the Division has made numerous contributions to both of these areas.  The Chief of the Divison of Mineral Metabolism is Dr. Khashayar Sakhaee, who is currently at the forefront of research into the pathogenesis and molecular basis of uric acid stones.

Research Interests of the Division

  • Pathogenesis and molecular genetic basis of uric acid stones
  • Pathogenesis and molecular genetic basis of hypercalciuria
  • Metabolic and molecular basis and the treatment of osteoporosis, osteomalacia and renal osteodystrophy
  • Pathophysiologic role of estrogen deficiency in renal hypercalciuria
  • Elucidation of molecular basis of aromatase inhibition in kidney stone formation and bone disease utilizing the knock-out mouse model
