UT Southwestern Appointment
Anoop Misra, MD, is a visiting assistant professor in Internal Medicine, Division of Nutrition and Metabolic Diseases.
Medical Education and Appointments
Dr Misra attended medical school and did his residency at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, India. Later he joined department of Internal Medicine at AIIMS as faculty. From a junior faculty member in 1991, he attained rank of Professor of Internal Medicine at AIIMS in 2000.
Research Interests
The focus of Dr Misra’s research has been on obesity, lipodystrophies, metabolic syndrome (insulin resistance syndrome), type 2 diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia and other cardiovascular risk factors.
As a faculty member at AIIMS, New Delhi, he showed high prevalence of diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome in the underprivileged population living in urban resettlement colonies. Other previously unreported observations on the same population included high prevalence of hyperhomocysteinemia and endothelial dysfunction (marker: soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1). Further, high prevalence of generalized and abdominal obesity associated with high C-reactive protein levels have been shown by his group in adolescent and young adult population in New Delhi.
As a World Health Organization fellow in 1996, he worked at the Center of Human Nutrition. During this time, he showed strong relationship of subcutaneous abdominal fat, particularly in the posterior abdominal region, with insulin sensitivity. Subsequently, in New Delhi, working on body composition of Asian Indians, he showed that current limits of body mass index and waist circumference are not appropriate for the diagnosis of obesity in Asian Indians based on the body composition data and prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors.
Other significant researches include correlation of intramyocellular triglyceride (IMCL) content of soleus muscle with insulin resistance in Asian Indians and use of simvastatin in the management of diabetic retinopathy. Dr Misra has also shown that young type 2 diabetics and young hyperlipidemic Asian Indians have cognitive dysfunction, and latter have early abnormalities in cerebral blood glow. In a collaborative research with Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi, his group contributed in the development of new laboratory marker for the evaluation of long-term glycemia in patients with diabetes mellitus.
Presently he is working on the clinical profile and pathophysiological correlations in acquired generalized lipodystrophies and lipodystrophy in HIV-infected subjects.
