Welcome to the UT Southwestern Lipid and Heart Disease Risk Management Clinic
Our facility is an outpatient lipid and cardiovascular clinic staffed by a team which includes physicians, a dietitian and exercise specialist. The major goal of the clinic is the ongoing education and treatment of patients who are in the primary or secondary prevention stages of coronary artery disease and who meet the characteristics of the metabolic syndrome. In house physician referral, outside physician referral, and self referral patients are accepted and depending on the type of referral, will be seen in one of two locations. A professional team approach ensures each patient is individually evaluated as to his/her risk factor stratification and then modification. Every patient is given specific goals with instructions on how to meet goals given. Meet our Lipid Clinic Team
How Heart Disease Happens:
Elevated levels of cholesterol and lipids (fats) in the blood contribute to the development of heart disease. Too much of these fats builds up on the walls of your arteries forming thick deposits called "atherosclerotic plaque." The build-up of plaque narrows your arteries so that your heart must work harder to force blood through. Plaque can also completely block off your heart arteries, as well as the arteries to your brain. These blockages prevent blood from carrying important nutrients and oxygen, which can result in angina (chest pain), heart attack, or stroke.
