FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW IN HEMATOLOGY/ONCOLOGY
The Hematology Oncology Fellowship program at UT Southwestern prepares physicians for careers in academic or clinical hematology/oncology by providing rigorous and comprehensive training in the full spectrum of adult hematologic and oncologic disorders. The Fellowship is a full three-year program.
Training takes place at Parkland Hospital, The Dallas VA Medical Center and Zale Lipshy University Hospital (see Affiliated Hospitals). Fellows are also responsible for ongoing care of outpatients at Parkland Hospital in five continuity clinics (benign and malignant hematology, breast, thoracic, and gastrointestinal genitourinary oncology), which are led by faculty with expertise in each area.
Basic and clinical research is an integral part of the training program. Bringing the best of medical science to clinical practice is a major goal at UT Southwestern, and a broad range of research opportunities are available. Fellows anticipating a career in laboratory-based academic medicine pursue 24 months of full-time clinical rotations followed by one to three years of laboratory research. Highly qualified applicants may be eligible for the Physician Scientist Training Program. Fellows interested in a clinical or clinical research career pursue 24 months of full-time clinical rotations followed by 12 months of clinical work that includes 4 months of time exclusively devoted to research.
The educational program (see Hematology Oncology Weekly Teaching Conferences) also includes an introductory biweekly series throughout the summer months, weekly case conferences in combined modality treatment of malignancies and hematology and hemato-pathology, and a conference highlighting faculty and fellow research.
