Message from the

Chairman

Welcome to the home page of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Here you will find information about our clinical, investigative, and educational programs.

Our Mission is to provide an environment and tools that promote the accomplishment of the following goals:

      1) To provide comprehensive dermatological care for patients with skin disease.

      2) To increase our understanding of normal and pathological processes in skin.

      3) To facilitate the growth of individuals, including medical students, resident physicians in dermatology and other specialties, research fellows, junior faculty and staff personnel within the department

History: A Division of Dermatology at Southwestern Medical School was established in 1972 by James H. Herndon, Jr., and a residency training program was established three years later. In 1979, James N. Gilliam assumed the Chairmanship, and he facilitated the transition from Division to Department. Paul R. Bergstresser became Department Chairman after the unanticipated death of Dr. Gilliam in 1984.  During the subsequent 23 years, a substantial expansion of clinical, investigative, and educational programs within the department resulted in national as well as international recognition.  Kim B. Yancey, M.D. became department chairman in 2007 at the time Dr. Bergstresser assumed the Editorship of the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.

Leadership: The department has become a leading academic center, having received numerous awards and recognitions for excellence in research, education, and patient care. In 1992, the American Academy of Dermatology gave it the prestigious Excellence in Education Award.  Between 1992 and 2006, the department held one of six national, NIH-funded Skin Disease Research Center Grants; it currently ranks 6th nationally among departments of dermatology in NIH grant support. Members of the faculty play major roles in national research, service, and patient-advocacy organizations, including the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Disease, Society for Investigative Dermatology, American Academy of Dermatology, and Association of Professors of Dermatology.

Education

The Department of Dermatology focuses on graduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education.

Residents in our Department have a tradition of passing the Certifying Examination of the American Board of Dermatology (ABD) and, in many cases, then entering well regarded Fellowship training programs.  Our Resident Class of 2008 scored at the 99th percentile on the ABD Certifying Exam.

Several of our Residents on a Clinical and Research Training Track have received support from UT Southwestern’s Physician Scientists Training Award Program, UT Southwestern’s President’s Research Council, Galderma Pilot and Feasibility Awards, the Dermatology Foundation, the Amgen Corporation, and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award for Medical Scientists.  These individuals have great significance and potential for our Department in the coming years.

Our Department offers Fellowship Training in Procedural Dermatology, and through an affiliation with Cockerell Laboratories, Fellowship Training in Dermatopathology.

Several of our junior faculty have gained enrollment in UT Southwestern’s Clinical Scholars Program – a commitment that has the potential to broaden and expand notably the knowledge, skills, and abilities of these young people.

Our Department hosts weekly didactic educational sessions and Grand Rounds that are both regularly attended by our Faculty, Residents, and interested physicians from the community.

Finally, working in conjunction with Dr. Gene Jones and the North Texas VAMC, our Department has established a Fellowship Training Program in Dermatology for Physician Assistants, the only program of this sort in the US.

Clinical Service

The UT Southwestern Department of Dermatology provides patient care at UT Southwestern, Parkland Memorial Hospital, UT Southwestern’s University Hospitals, the North Dallas VA Medical Center, and Children’s Medical Center.  When all patient care responsibilities at these sites are totaled, our Department is responsible for approximately 50,000 ambulatory encounters annually.

Our Department provides subspecialty care in Dermatologic Surgery, Phototherapy, and Cosmetic Dermatology.  In addition, we maintain productive professional relationships with Cockerell Laboratories and ProPath Laboratories for expertise and education in Dermatopathology.

A Pediatric Dermatologist will join our full-time faculty in July 2010.

Our Faculty is recognized locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally for its expertise in connective tissue diseases, non melanoma skin cancer, immunobullous diseases, cutaneous lymphomas, pigment disorders, and phototherapy.  Subspecialty clinics in these content areas are offered in our Clinic at CB1 and are highly subscribed.

Most clinical research in our Department is investigator initiated.  Indeed, Faculty members conduct research-oriented subspecialty clinics concerning morphea, cutaneous lupus erythematosus, cutaneous lymphomas, neurofibromatosis, and immunobullous diseases that offer patients unique opportunities to participate in clinical research and garner experience with new and emerging therapies.

Several of our Faculty members hold membership in Best Doctors of America, Best Doctors in Dallas, and/or recognition as a Texas Super Doctor.

Both Dermatologic Surgery and Medical Dermatology rank highly in institutional Press Ganey Surveys.  Most of our patients are established and loyal.
