The Pediatrics Critical Care Fellowship Program was founded in 1977 with the objective of training individuals who are passionate about critical care medicine and to become academic leaders in the field. The program provides the trainee with the opportunity to acquire clinical expertise in the care of critically ill infants and children, as well as an in-depth knowledge of the pathogenesis of severe illnesses. In addition, the program offers an array of research training opportunities that helps fellows learn to ask and answer scientific questions that relate to the genetic, molecular, cellular, physiologic, or clinical aspects of pediatric critical care medicine. The Division and collaborating faculty have particular expertise in molecular biology, molecular pathophysiology and translational clinical research. Finally, the program is designed to further the professional development of of young pediatric physicians by gradual addition of responsibilities. During the three (3) year program fellows acquire the interpersonal and leadership skills to become respected professionals throughout the remainders of their careers.
For the academic year 2007-2008, the training program will offer 4 positions through the Pediatric Critical Care Match. In addition, the training program will offer 1 “non-match” positions through the UT Southwestern Training Grant in Trauma, Burns and Critical Care Medicine (Drs. Jureta Horton, principal investigator). This training grant will provide the fellow with 24 months of protected research time and a highly structured, multi-disciplinary integrative research curriculum.
