Ramon Diaz-Arrastia, MD, PhD
Principal Investigator

Dr. Diaz-Arrastia is Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. He is an attending physician in the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at Parkland Memorial Hospital and was recently named Director of Clinical Core at the Alzheimer’s Disease Center. He holds a B.A. in Biochemistry magna cum laude from Rice University, a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Baylor College of Medicine and an M.D. cum laude from Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Diaz-Arrastia has completed a medical internship at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA, and a residency in neurology at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, NY. He subsequently completed a fellowship at the center for Neurobiology and Behavior at Columbia University before moving to Dallas in 1993. Dr. Diaz-Arrastia is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and is Board Eligible for the American Board of Clinical Neurophysiology. Awards and honors received by Dr. Diaz-Arrastia include Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Omega Alpha and the National Research Service Award. Dr. Diaz-Arrastia has over 25 Journal publications and abstracts to his credit including publications on neuroimaging in epilepsy, homocysteine and neurologic disease, and the neurophysiologic and neuroradiologic features of intractable epilepsy after traumatic brain injury in adults. Dr. Diaz-Arrastia has had an interest in traumatic brain injury, and in November 1998 started a traumatic brain injury registry at Parkland Memorial Hospital. He was lead author on an analysis of intractable epilepsy resulting from traumatic brain injury published last year. Dr. Diaz-Arrastia is the PI on various research projects including a study of the role of hyperhomocysteinemia in Alzheimer’s disease and a project that utilizes tissue collected through the multicenter National NeuroAIDS Tissue Consortium. His background as a neuroscientist combining the basic science of neurology with the clinical correlates of neurologic disorders provides an excellent basis for the research projects of the North Texas Model System for Traumatic Brain Injury. Dr. Diaz-Arrastia is fluent in Spanish, and has frequently participated in community outreach and media presentation to the Spanish-speaking community in topics such as epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease and traumatic brain injury.
Mary Carlile, MD
Co-Principal Investigator

Dr. Carlile is the Medical Director of Traumatic Brain Injury Services at Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation in Dallas, Texas, and an attending physician of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Baylor University Medical Center. She is a diplomate, American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and a fellow, American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. She served as an oral board examiner in 2000 and 2001. She is a member of the International Association for the Study of Traumatic Brain Injury, the National Head Injury Foundation and Baylor Health Care System Committee on Bioethics. She is a professional member of the Brain Injury Association of Texas and the Greater Dallas Collaborative Group for Coordination of Services for Brain Injury. In 1998 Dr. Carlile was appointed by then Governor George Bush to chair the Texas Traumatic Injury Advisory Board and currently sits on their Advisory Council. Honors for Dr. Carlile include Graduate with Distinction Honors- University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, Co-Chief Resident- PM&R University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center/Parkland Hospital, Ursula Krusen Award- Texas PM&R Society, and the Barry S. Smith Award as Outstanding Teaching Physician Baylor University Medical Center Residency Program for PM&R.
Karen Kowalske, MD

Dr. Kowalske is Associate Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at UT Southwestern Medical Center as well as Chairwoman of the Department of PM & R and Medical Director of the inpatient rehabilitation units at Parkland Memorial Hospital and Zale-Lipshy University Hospital. She is also the Medical Director for Pate Rehabilitation. Dr. Kowalske obtained here B.S. and M.D. degree from the University of Florida where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She completed her internship and residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia before moving to Dallas in 1990. She has authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications in rehabilitation medicine and has 15 years experience in treating patients with traumatic brain injury. Although her primary interest is in burn rehabilitation, she also has an active interest in outcome after polytrauma including multiple fractures and traumatic brain injuries, and has two TBI related publications.
Anne Hudak, MD

Dr. Hudak is an Assistant Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabiliation (PM&R) at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. She received her B.S. magna cum laude in Biology from SUNY at Albany and her doctorate of medicine from SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn. She went on to complete an internship in Internal Medicine at Long Island College Hospital. Subsuqently, she completed a residency in anesthesia at the Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC where she served as co-chief resident. After two years of practice in anesthesiology, she joined PM&R by completing a residency at UTSW. She completed a fellowship in traumatic brain injury under the tutelage of M. Elizabeth Sandel, M.D. at Kaiser Foundation Rehabilitation Center. She returned to join the faculty at UTSW in 2001. Dr. Hudak is a diplomate of the ABA and AAPM&R. She is a member of the AAPM&R and a member of the Brain Injury Special Interest Group. She currently serves as faculty for the TBI clinic and the botox clinic at PMH and is one of the faculty members that provides onsite visits to Pate Rehabilitation. Her role in the project will be to coordinate the interphase between the NT-TBIMS and PM&R services at UTSW.
Caryn Harper, MS

Ms. Harper is a faculty associate and is the project administrator for the NT-TBI MS projects. She received a B.S. in psychology and a B.A. in sociology from Southern Methodist University. She has a Master of Science degree in Human Development from the University of Texas in Dallas. Her research experience includes projects in affective disorders and learning disabilities. She was a board member and Secretary of the Executive Board of the Learning Disabilities Association and an editorial reviewer for the Journal of Child Neurology. In 2000, she received the Master Service Award for the LDA. Her publications include 6 book chapters which she co-authored with pediatric behavioral neurologist, Warren Weinberg, MD and over 30 articles and posters in developmental and behavioral neurology as well as traumatic brain injury. She has been with UT Southwestern since 1988 and joined the North Texas TBI research team in November of 2002.
