This program is intended to identify and develop promising student researchers who intend to pursue careers in medicine and research, but who may not pursue formal graduate education (i.e. may not pursue Ph.D. doctoral training).

If you are only interested in obtaining the Ph.D. degree or if you intend to apply to M.D., Ph.D. programs, you should be applying to the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program (SURF). Owing to the differences in focus, students should apply to only one of these two programs: either to the SURF program or the UT-SUMR program.

Students will be placed with mentors to work on specific projects under the supervision of the mentor and fellows in the mentor's laboratory. In addition, students are encouraged to attend a series of weekly luncheon seminars in which faculty and former student researchers discuss the fundamentals of basic and clinical research. The weekly schedule of these lectures can be found here.

A stipend of $ 3000 will be provided for a ten-week fellowship period. The period of the fellowship overlaps with programs supporting medical student research. In 2008, students will be appointed from June 3 - August 8. Students are permitted to take a week off during the ten-week period (the timing of this is to be decided after consultation with the mentor).

Texas residency is required.

Preference will be given to students who have completed course work that would prepare them to conduct laboratory research. Beginning with applications for positions for the summer of 2007, questions designed to enhance the diversity of the participating student class are considered a a part of the online application.

Participants that demonstrate exceptional potential during their participation in this program will be eligible to reapply in subsequent summers.

The on-line application form can be accessed here.
