MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Southwestern Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery is to enhance education, develop research, and promote clinical excellence in minimally invasive surgery for the benefit of patients.

CENTER GOALS

  1. Enhance surgical education in minimally invasive surgery, including the training of medical students, residents, fellows, practicing surgeons, and nurses in basic and advanced laparoscopic procedures and other minimally invasive techniques.
  2. Develop research in minimally invasive surgery, including research in surgical education and training, as well as animal-based models and clinical investigations.
  3. Promote clinical excellence in minimally invasive surgery.

RATIONALE

Ongoing technology-based research results in a constant evolution of minimally invasive surgical techniques.  These techniques must be rigorously studied to demonstrate patient benefit, and where appropriate, should be introduced into clinical practice.  Safe implementation of such state-of-the art techniques requires suitable training and education of surgeons and other health professionals.
