The UT Southwestern Center for Breast Care provides state of the art services for the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer and breast related disorders. The Center integrates radiology services and surgical, medical oncology and radiation oncology consultative services in one facility. The Center offers its patients the opportunity to participate in exciting clinical trials for diagnosis, prevention and treatment of breast cancer. The Center offers women access to the newest techniques in breast cancer surgery, including sentinel node biopsy as an alternative to axillary dissection. The Center was an active participant in the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) Breast Cancer Prevention Trial which found that tamoxifen reduced the risk of developing breast cancer by 45%. The center is also a research site for the second generation breast cancer prevention trial, the STAR trial. The Mary L. Brown Breast Cancer Genetics and Risk Assessment Program utilizes a computer generated program which calculates the risk of a patient developing breast cancer based upon an individual’s genetic profile and other risk factors. This allows patients to make decisions regarding appropriate prevention strategies that are available. The Lymphedema Program offers an innovative comprehensive clinic for the prevention and treatment of lymphedema after breast cancer surgery and surgery for other cancers.
Dr. Marilyn Leitch is the Medical Director of the UTSW Center for Breast Care and Dr. Elizabeth Naftalis is the Medical Director of the Volunteer Program at the Center.
