You Depend on Them, They Depend on You
The skilled health care professionals who make up your Transplant Team share a common goal: the success of your kidney transplant! Each of them will take a personal interest in answering your questions and taking care of your medical needs. They will also help you keep your spirits up along the way.
Make an effort to meet each of them, and keep the lines of communication open. They will count on you to express your concerns and fears and to tell them immediately if there are any changes in the way you feel physically. In this respect, you are the most important member of the Transplant Team.
Use the Directory at the end of this section to record the names and phone numbers of your Transplant Team members. Use the space provided at the end of this guide to jot down any questions or concerns that you want to discuss with them.
Your Transplant Surgeon
This physician will perform the actual transplantation procedure and will monitor your medication before, during, and after surgery. He or she will also check your incision periodically to make sure it is healing properly.
Your Transplant Physician/Nephrologist
You will see this doctor often during your hospital stay. Each day, he or she will examine you, check your test results, and adjust your medication as needed. Again, be sure to alert your physician to any change in the way you feel, no matter how insignificant it may seem to you. And remember-your doctor expects you to ask questions, so don't be shy!
