Pretransplant Testing

Throughout this period, you'll find yourself taking many tests; you may wonder when it will all end! But keep in mind that you are taking a giant step forward in the transplantation process.  These tests will help your Transplant Team discover potential problems before they occur and determine if transplantation is truly the best option for you.  When all of your test results are in, your doctors will have a clear picture of your overall health status.  This increases the likelihood of success.

Your Transplant Team may ask you to undergo any of the following procedures. (Use the last pages in this section to keep track of your appointments for testing.)

Chest x-ray-This will tell your doctors if your lungs and lower respiratory tract are healthy.

Electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG)-This will reveal how well your heart is working and may reveal heart damage that was previously unsuspected.

Echocardiogram-Used for the same purpose as an EKG, with ultrahigh frequency sound waves used to look at the heart.

Stress test-Exercise session to measure the strength of your heart

Bone survey and hand x-ray-These studies will reveal whether your bone structure is sound.

Upper gastrointestinal (GI) series-This will show whether your esophagus and stomach are disease free.

Gallbladder x-ray-If you have gallstones, they will show up here.

Lower GI series-This will help your doctors be certain you are free of intestinal abnormalities.

Blood tests-Your blood count, blood and tissue type, blood chemistries, and immune system function will all be checked.  In addition, blood tests for certain infectious diseases will be performed.

Pulmonary function test-You will be asked to breathe into a tube attached to a measuring device which will reveal how well you lungs are working.

Sonogram (ultrasound)-This procedure will create a picture of your kidneys and surrounding structures.

CT (CAT) scan -This computerized image will enable your kidneys and other organs to be visualized in greater detail.

MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)-May be used in place of CT scan or ultrasound t see inside your body.

Other tests-As part of your overall workup, your doctor may also order a gynecologic exam and mammogram (for women) or a blood test to measure prostate-specific antigen (for men).

Your doctors, nurses, and technicians will make you as comfortable as possible during this period.  Again--don't be afraid to ask questions!
