The primary mission of the Division of Surgical Transplantation is to provide excellence in care for abdominal transplant and transplant-related general surgery patients. This includes kidney and kidney/pancreas transplants for both adults and children. In addition, our mission includes teaching surgical residents and students at Parkland Health and Hospital Systems, Dallas Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Zale Lipshy University Hospital and Children's Medical Center Dallas. The third component of our mission is research focused on providing a greater understanding of transplant immunology, organ preservation and immunosuppression in order to improve patient care and outcomes.
The Division of Surgical Transplantation participates in providing transplant related surgical services and vascular access services at the four primary teaching hospitals--Parkland Health and Hospital Systems, The Dallas Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Zale Lipshy University Hospital and Children's Medical Center Dallas. The division is successfully performing donor nephrectomies and kidney transplants jointly with the Children's Medical Transplant team.
In our sixth year as a division, the kidney and kidney/pancreas transplant waiting lists have increased. This is largely due to the shortened pre-transplant work-up time. The "Surgery T" service continues to offer both inpatient and outpatient services. We've initiated a database to track outcomes for vascular access patients in an effort to provide better patient care and prevent complications. The Southwestern Surgical Congress published our paper entitled Latex Anaphylaxis during Kidney-Pancreas Transplantation for publication at its annual meeting in 1999.
Our main, ongoing goal is to continue development of the Division of Surgical Transplantation into a multi-organ transplant program. We intend to expand our transplant service to additional university affiliated hospitals. Laparoscopic donor nephrectomies are now offered as an option to our living donors. We expect the number of living donors to increase as well. Our faculty will continue providing excellent care for transplant and general surgery patients while seeking to increase patient referrals. We regularly visit our referring dialysis centers in an effort to enhance our quality of patient care. Members of our Division will continue educating residents and students in transplant and vascular access techniques and advances. Our research will continue its focus on transplant physiology, immunology and techniques to improve the quality of care and life for our patients.
