Other vascular conditions can cause blockages of the major blood vessels that feed the legs, and major organs such as the kidneys. Most of these blockages result from plaques that build up inside the blood vessel and are caused by atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). When these blockages affect the legs, this can result in leg pain while walking, or more severe problems that could ultimately result in gangrene and possible amputation. Similar blockages can deprive the kidneys of blood, resulting in high blood pressure and loss of kidney function. Many of these blockages can be successfully treated using balloon angioplasty and stent placement, avoiding the need for major surgery. For certain types of blockages, and for certain patients, standard surgery is still the best option. The vascular doctors at Southwestern offer both methods of treatment. For more information about these procedures, please call us at 214-645-0538.
