While the overall goal of the Vascular Surgery Service is to provide excellent patient care, the underlying mission is to create an exciting clinical environment for education and research. The Vascular Fellowship Program is one of 80 approved by the Residency Review Committee. The Vascular Surgery Service is also responsible for providing the senior general surgery residents with a balanced experience in vascular surgery cases. The  addition of UT Southwestern University Hospital - St. Paul as an affiliated institution of the Residency Program has increased the overall vascular case load and educational opportunities. The Vascular Surgery Division has developed a number of clinical and basic research initiatives.
The service provides approximately 1,000 vascular operations each year at Parkland Memorial Hospital, UT Southwestern University Hospitals - St. Paul & Zale Lipshy and the North Texas Veterans Health Care System. There is a dedicated Vascular Surgery Service based at each of these hospitals.
In addition to reconstruction of blood vessels, the Vascular Surgery Service is responsible for the medical care of patients with a wide variety of vascular disorders including vasospastic diseases, hypercoagulable syndromes, large artery vasculitis, and other nonsurgical ischemic syndromes. Outpatient services are available at the UT Southwestern University Hospital Professional Building 2, Parkland Memorial Hospital, and the North Texas Veterans Health Care System. The Clinical Center for Vascular Disease at UT Southwestern University Hospital Professional Building 2 has been instrumental in centralizing the growing referral practice of complex vascular problems, coordinating multidisciplinary management and treatment of patients' vascular disease and co-morbid conditions, and providing longitudinal follow-up.
To serve the needs of vascular disease patients, both in and out of the hospital, state-of-the-art non-invasive vascular laboratories are at the Clinical Center for Vascular Disease in UT Southwestern University Hospital Professional Building 2 and at the North Texas Veterans Health Care System. All laboratories are staffed with vascular nurse-technologists, registered vascular technologists, and ultrasonographers. Under the direction of the Vascular Surgery Service a variety of tests are performed based on Doppler ultrasound, plethysmography, and duplex ultrasonography with color imaging. Over 5,000 studies are completed yearly in these vascular labs. All laboratories are fully accredited by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL).
