Transfer of UT Southwestern Animals Offsite
Rationale:
Before the IACUC approves a protocol that requires sending UT Southwestern owned animals to another institution for continued study, the IACUC must determine that the receiving institution meets the requirements to receive UT Southwestern animals.
Policy:
If ownership is retained by UT Southwestern:
- The IACUC requests that the following information/documentation be provided with the PI’s animal protocol:
- confirmation of the receiving institution’s AAALAC accreditation;
- an approval letter from the receiving institution’s IACUC for the animal protocol that covers the use of UT Southwestern animals;
- a copy of the receiving institution’s approved animal protocol; and
- a letter from the PI stating that if an animal dies while on study at the receiving institution, a necropsy will be performed by a Veterinarian and a pathology report will be presented for UT Southwestern’s IACUC for review (for non rodent animals only);
or
- an approval letter from the receiving institution’s IACUC for the animal protocol that covers the use of UT Southwestern animals;
- a copy of the receiving institution’s approved animal protocol;
- documentation of the receiving institution’s OLAW Assurance number covering the site where UT Southwestern animals will be housed;
- documentation of the receiving institution’s USDA Registration number (if applicable) covering the site where UT Southwestern animals will be housed;
- a letter from the PI stating that if an animal dies while on study at the receiving institution, a necropsy will be performed by a Veterinarian and a pathology report will be presented for UT Southwestern’s IACUC for review (for non rodent animals only); and
- a copy of the receiving institution’s most recent program review and facility inspection.
If ownership is transferred from UT Southwestern to the receiving institution:
The following requirements must be met when transferring ownership of animals to another institution.
- Appropriate documentation (e.g. Material Transfer Agreement or Purchase Order) must be filled out and approved by the appropriate legal office at each institution.
- A health report must be created by the UT Southwestern veterinarians before animals can be shipped.
Applicability:
This policy applies to all researchers who ship UT Southwestern animals to another institution for continued study under a UT Southwestern Medical Center approved protocol.
Instructions:
If you are planning on shipping an animal exposed to a hazardous agent, contact Environmental Health and Safety and the IACUC Office.
Exceptions:
Exceptions to this policy may be granted by the IACUC.
