DALLAS — July 25, 2006 — Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center are seeking patients to participate in medical studies on depression, type 2 diabetes and psoriasis. All clinical trials are approved by UT Southwestern's Institutional Review Board, which reviews them for benefits, risks, side effects and informed consent.

Type 2 diabetes
Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center are enrolling patients for a study investigating the effects of an approved diabetes medication on how well the heart performs. Eligible study candidates must have type 2 diabetes and a risk factor for heart disease including high blood pressure, high cholesterol or tobacco use. Participants can not have congestive heart failure and can not currently be taking Actos or Avandia for diabetes. Qualified participants will receive study medications, a treadmill exercise test, a magnetic resonance imaging of the heart, glucose meter to measure levels at home, a physical examination and blood tests to see how well the sugar and cholesterol are controlled. Depression
UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers are looking for eligible candidates who are depressed and are taking an SSRI antidepressant (Prozac, Paxil, Celexa, Lexapro or Zoloft) for four weeks or more to participate in a clinical study. The study investigates whether adding an exercise program to SSRI therapy will help reduce depressive symptoms. Psoriasis
Dermatologists at UT Southwestern Medical Center are seeking candidates 12 years of age or older for a 16-week study involving a topical cream for psoriasis. Candidates must be able to make eight to nine visits to the study center, must be in good health and not pregnant or breastfeeding. If selected, minors must bring parents or guardians to each medical center visit. Participants will receive study-related medical care and medication at no cost.
