DALLAS — June 21, 2006 — Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center are seeking patients to participate in medical studies on ischemic stroke, depression and type 1 diabetes. All clinical trials are approved by UT Southwestern's Institutional Review Board, which reviews them for benefits, risks, side effects and informed consent.
Ischemic stroke
Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center are currently enrolling people 45 years of age or older who recently had a mild ischemic stroke for a study of an investigational drug to prevent further stroke or heart attack. Those participants must not be diabetic, pregnant or have cancer. Study treatment will be provided at no cost. For more information, call 214-648-0363.
Depression
The department of psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center is conducting a research study on depression. To be eligible, you must be female, married, depressed, have marital concerns, feel that your marital problems contribute to your depression, and your husband must be willing to participate in the research. Type 1 diabetes
UT Southwestern Medical Center is enrolling people for a type 1 diabetes clinical trial. Eligible participants must have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes within the past three months. Participants also must be between 12 and 45 years of age and be willing to comply with intensive diabetes management.
Other ongoing studies seeking participants include:
- A study of the risk of developing type 1 diabetes in people related to a person with the disease: Eligible participants who could be screened are first- and second-degree blood relatives who are between 1 and 20 years old.
- A study to assess the genetic risk for developing type 1 diabetes: Eligible families must have at least two siblings with type 1 diabetes; Mexican-American or African-American families must have at least one child with diabetes.
- A study of T-cells: Eligible patients must have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes within 12 months; be between the ages of 8 and 35; and weigh at least 88 pounds.
