With Labor Day just around the corner, the end of the summer season is upon us. This week on Health Watch, we’ll talk about the remaining summer days. Even though we think of Labor Day as the end of summer, we’ve still got nearly a month to go before autumn begins. That means in much of the country, it’s still hot.

People who work or exercise outdoors need to be aware of heat dangers. Dr. Benjamin Levine, a sports medicine expert at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says it’s important to stay hydrated. For regular workouts, just drinking when you’re thirsty during and after the workout should be fine. More serious athletes and those doing hard work outdoors may need to weigh themselves before and after exercise to measure the amount of water lost through sweat that then needs to be replaced. But be careful about drinking too much water. That can be almost as dangerous as not drinking enough.
