DALLAS — May 8, 2007 — Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center are seeking patients to participate in medical studies for anemia, dental implants and shortness of breath. All clinical trials are approved by UT Southwestern’s Institutional Review Board, which reviews them for benefits, risks, side effects and informed consent.
Anemia or low iron
UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers are evaluating a test for lack of iron absorption in participants who have iron deficiency anemia. Prospective study participants must not be pregnant or post-partum, must commit for two months in the study and must not be taking iron supplements. Those who qualify will receive medical testing at no charge to them and will be compensated for their participation. For more information, please call 214-645-6220.
Dental implants
Physicians in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center are looking for people with loose fitting lower complete dentures to participate in an implant study to determine whether an implant-supported denture improves a person's biting force and jaw muscle efficiency. Participants must have a complete upper and lower denture and be non-smokers to qualify. Volunteers who meet the trial criteria will undergo the procedure at no charge. Shortness of breath
Scientists at UT Southwestern Medical Center are seeking men between the ages of 20 and 45 who are mildly to moderately overweight but otherwise healthy for a study on obesity and shortness of breath. This study needs men who experience unexplained shortness of breath upon exertion, as well as those who do not. Participants must be non-smokers and not have asthma. The research is being conducted at the Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas in conjunction with UT Southwestern.
