The Division of Basic Sciences allows students to apply for admission to the DBS as an advanced student. This route to admission is appropriate for students who:
- Have already chosen a research focus and know which graduate program they wish to join
- Have an undergraduate education that has fully prepared them to begin advanced graduate study in their discipline
- Have the command of spoken and written English required for advanced graduate study at UT Southwestern
Advanced standing means that students are excused from the DBS first year core course and must join a graduate program and begin taking advanced courses from the time that they enroll at UT Southwestern. This should reduce the time required for the Ph.D. degree by nine months to one year.
Admission Process for Advanced Standing
Students applying for advanced standing should first complete the online application and then send an email to Deborah Evalds (Deborah.Evalds@utsouthwestern.edu) indicating an interest in being considered for advanced standing.
If, after reviewing an application for advanced standing, the admissions committee feels that the student's past academic and research performance is appropriate, the student will be informed by email that they will be interviewed as a candidate for advanced standing. For students in North America, the interviews will be part of the normal process of visiting UT Southwestern. For students outside North America, these interviews will occur the first week after the student arrives at UT Southwestern.
