Personal property such as works of art, furniture, coin collections or other high-value collections can be subject to estate taxes. Making gifts of these items to UT Southwestern can simplify estate planning and help reduce estate taxes. Gifts can also provide a tax deduction the year the gift is given.
Personal property gifts can be deducted for the fair market value, provided use of the property is related to UT Southwestern tax-exempt functions. If the property cannot be used in this way, the tax deduction is the lesser of the property's original cost or its current fair market value. Gifts of personal property are often used to enhance the UT Southwestern campus.
