Introduction:

Skills in laboratory management are indispensable for a family physician working in a variety of practice settings. Yet, few residency based learning opportunities in laboratory management are available. To address this issue, a longitudinal office laboratory management curriculum was developed based on the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) guidelines in accordance with the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA '88). This curriculum features practical laboratory management skills using interactive web-based modules, short didactic sessions, and hands-on laboratory experience.

Family and Community Medicine Resident Participation:

This is a required rotation for all third year residents. Notification of successful completion of these objectives leads to certification for CLIA moderate complexity laboratory directorship.

Curriculum Content:

The Internet portion of the curriculum is comprised of 6 web-based modules. Residents must also complete twenty hours of supervised hands-on laboratory experiences at the Parkland Health & Hospital System, University Hospital - Zale Lipshy campus, and the UT Southwestern Ambulatory Care Center. From the Internet, residents complete assigned readings, cases and post-session assignments. These web-based modules allow residents to work at their own pace from any geographical location. Web-based learning, when combined with hands-on laboratory training promotes knowledge acquisition and problem solving in a practice-based context.

Curriculum development faculty are from the UT Southwestern Departments of Pathology, Family and Community Medicine and the Office of Medical Education.  Specific authors of each module are listed below:
