The Parkland Family Medicine Clinic is a few blocks north of the main campus and Parkland Memorial Hospital. Faculty members are assigned to supervise the clinic each half day. They are readily accessible to the residents during clinic time.
Resources
Patient scheduling is computerized making it easier to track office visits, diagnoses, and procedures done in the clinic by each resident. Each staff person has their own computer workstation and the residents share the two computer workstations in their office area giving them special access to a variety of software, the world wide web and educational CD-ROM software. There is also an extensive library of reference books and video tapes readily available to residents in each Family Medicine Center.
Procedures
Hands on training is an important aspect of a residency experience. While the procedures performed vary, in general residents have the opportunity to perform office procedures including Obstetrical ultrasound, colposcopy, endometrial biopsy, cryosurgery, flexible sigmoidoscopy, circumcision, minor surgical procedures, casting and splinting, among other common family medicine office procedures. Other services available to our patients are pulmonary function testing, pulmonary inhalation treatment, tympanometry, vision and audiologic testing, and electrocardiography. Physicians in-training who are familiar with manipulation techniques are encouraged to maintain their skill given the proper clinical situation arises. Residents also learn the art of office counseling. They take an active role in helping to manage their patients with psychological needs by participating in office co-counseling sessions. This is an appointment made specifically for the patient to address their needs with the resident along with the Family Medicine Center's Ph.D. psychologist. Common situations include depression, anxiety, marital strife, parent-child conflict, suicidal ideations, domestic abuse, and rape.
Laboratory and X-ray
The laboratory is staffed full-time and functions as a CLIA waived center. Physicians perform microscopy on urinalysis, wet preps, semen analysis, KOH preps and others. In-office testing capabilities include pregnancy testing and rapid strep testing. Laboratory tests are sent out usually to Parkland Memorial Hospital. Turn around time is twenty four hours for most standard tests. X-ray facilities are also available.
The Patients
Our patients are uniquely varied, encompassing all ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, medical and psychosocial problems, including Medicaid and Medicare patients and indigent patients through the Dallas County Hospital District. Our philosophy is to prepare the resident to easily transition from residency training into real life practice, regardless of the type of practice they choose.
