Compensation
House staff compensation is competitive with other large teaching hospitals in the Southwest. Included in the compensation package are: on-call meals, parking, paid vacation for all three postgraduate years, lab coats (and laundry service for lab coats) and health care coverage, including available family coverage.
Salaries and Insurance
Current Salaries for Residents.
Salaries are revised on July 1 of each year. Over the past four years, salaries have increased from 3.5 to 8 percent per annum.
Life insurance and disability insurance is available. Health insurance is available for the resident and the resident's spouse and dependent children.
Professional Liability Insurance
All interns and residents (house staff) in training are provided with professional liability (malpractice) insurance coverage for claims arising in the course of their training, "Moonlighting" is not covered. Evidence of coverage will be furnished upon written request. Each house staff member is covered on the effective date of appointment. Coverage expires at termination of appointment. House staff physicians, upon becoming aware of an actual or alleged claim, must immediately advise their program director and the hospital risk manager.
Departmental Funds
Subject to the availability of funds and approval by the program director, special benefits, including educational leave and travel, may be provided from departmental funds. One to five days of educational leave is available for residents at the second and third year level. Book money is available each year for all residents.
Meals
Free on-call meals are provided at St. Paul University Hospital and at Parkland Memorial Hospital.
Parking
Free parking is available at St. Paul University Hospital and Children's Medical Center.
Lab Coats
Two lab coats per year are provided.
Paid Time Off
- 3 weeks for first-year residents
- 3 weeks for second and third year residents
- 2 days for USMLE or COMLEX Exams
- 1-10 days of sick leave per year
- 1-15 days of family leave (maternity leave) per year (included in sick leave and vacation time)
Time off must be approved by the coordinator and program director and coordinated with the service to which the resident is assigned.
Professional Organizations
American Academy of Family Physicians memberships will be paid for all residents.
Moonlighting
Moonlighting is permitted subject to the approval of the program director.
Computer Availability
Several computers, located in the house staff lounge and in the medical library, are available for the exclusive use of residents. In addition, computers are also available at the FMC for resident use. Assistance in preparation of slides for conference presentations is available.
Continuing Medical Education Meetings and Workshops
All residents may attend local meetings as approved by the program director.
Library
Medical libraries are located in St. Paul University Hospital and at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Each is staffed by full time librarians to assist the physicians and residents in accessing medical literature and providing educational materials. Links with academic libraries are present to widen the scope of educational material available at all times. The FM Center also has a library exclusively for the department of family medicine.
