The Waco Family Medicine Residency Program is located  approximately 100 miles south of Dallas/Ft. Worth and 100 miles north of Austin on I-35. Waco has a population of approximately 105,000. The program provides patient care to nearly 40,000 active patients, with 65,000 visits per year. Patient demographics by race at the family practice center show 35% White, 35% Black, 28% Hispanic, and 2% other. Forty-six percent of the patients are 18 years of age or younger; 24% are 19-34 years of age; 17% are 35-54 years of age; 6% are 55-65 years of age; and 7% are 65 years of age and older. The program trains 12 residents per year in the three years of training.

The Waco site provides a supportive environment for learning. The faculty and residents are enthusiastic and interested in teaching, and special experiences described below make Waco a unique clerkship site. A typical schedule for a student at the Waco Family Medicine Residency Program includes focused one week experiences on the inpatient adult medicine and pediatric services at Hillcrest Hospital to provide exposure to medicine as practiced at a community-based hospital. The remainder of the schedule is outpatient-oriented with the student caring for ambulatory patients under supervision of upper-level residents or attendings. In addition, there are experiences in gynecology, colposcopy, outpatient procedures, pediatric heart problems and dermatology. Problem-based learning sessions are also part of the scheduled experiences.

Patient-care locations where students participate include the family practice center and Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center. Students have contact with the family medicine, pediatric and obstetrics/gynecology faculty on the inpatient services and faculty scheduled as attending physicians in the outpatient setting.  There are no scheduled experiences with community physicians at this clerkship site.

Comfortable and free housing is provided for clerks at Waco.  Two apartments are available for student use with two students sharing a two-bedroom, two-bathroom furnished apartment.  Cleaning services are provided.

Take I-35 south to Waco, approximately 100 miles. Exit I-35 at 17th Street. Turn right on 17th Street. 17th will curve into 18th after you pass Waco Drive. Proceed on 18th Street one street past Colcord Avenue to Providence Drive. Turn right on Providence Drive. The family practice center is directly behind Providence Hospital with an attached parking lot.
