Students will spend time at both the JPS Residency Program and at the Stop 6 Clinic, a community health center in east Fort Worth.  The John Peter Smith Family Practice Residency Program has been affiliated with UT Southwestern since 1973. The program is the largest family medicine residency program in the nation with 40% of the graduates practicing in towns with a population of less than 15,000. It is also the largest residency training program at John Peter Smith Hospital, with primary responsibility for the care of most patients. The residency program has two distinct family medicine curricular tracks: traditional and rural. This allows maximum flexibility for resident training. There are 24 residents per year, supported by 13 full-time family medicine faculty.

Located immediately south of downtown Fort Worth and approximately 30 miles west of Dallas, John Peter Smith Hospital (JPS) is a 429-bed full service hospital which serves as the central facility for the Tarrant County Hospital District. Patients who are seen reflect Fort Worth’s diverse population. Through the family health clinic located at JPS, there is an international health clinic where refugees from a variety of countries are seen. JPS serves more than 99,000 individuals throughout Tarrant County.

For two weeks, clerkship students will work in one of seven community clinics located in Fort Worth, Arlington and Bedford while also spending one day with a family physician in private practice. The other two weeks will be spent doing a combination of inpatient and outpatient work with two to four overnight calls. Some students may be able to spend all four weeks in the outpatient setting, depending on demand and site availability.

From Dallas, take I-30 to Ft. Worth.  As you near downtown, get into the left lane. Exit on I-35 South. Move to the far right lane and take the Rosedale exit. Cross Rosedale and go to Allen Street. Turn right. The hospital and parking are on the right.

Medical Student parking is located on the East side of the hospital in employee parking Lot O (see map). Students arriving for the first day of their rotation can access this lot by entering a code (see your email) on the keypad located just prior to the entrance gate. Physician Services will issue an ID badge/parking pass for this lot during the check-in process.  Medical students are not allowed to park in the public parking garage for any reason.

The Out Patient Clinic is across the street from the parking garage. Go into the outpatient clinic and go to the 4th floor to the Family Practice Center. Someone there will direct you to the conference room.
