Students at this clerkship site will rotate through four full-service family care clinics in Arlington and Colleyville, Texas. Unlike the other sites, this location is not based at a family medicine residency program. All clinics are west of Dallas, within 30 to 45 minutes' driving time from the medical school, depending on the traffic.

Students will experience a wide variety of patient volumes and procedures, depending on the attending physician. A typical day will include routine well-baby, child and adult exams. The student will participate in the evaluation and treatment of patients with acute and chronic medical, surgical, orthopedic and gynecologic illnesses. Exercise tolerance tests, fibrosigmoidoscopic exams and vasectomies are done by several of the attendings.

There will be plenty of student/attending interactions. How much the student is involved is generally determined by the student’s level of drive, confidence and stamina. There is no call. Interested students may work in the "dreaded" Arlington night clinic, where the patient volume is incredible. Students may also accompany the attending on rounds, nursing home calls and an occasional home visit.

The student will learn the current guidelines for asthma, cholesterol and diabetic care. They will be expected to know recommendations for prostate, colon and breast cancer screening. Because of the high proportion of pediatric care, clerks will need to be up to date on immunization schedules. (It would be a good idea to know the adult immunization schedule as well.)

There will be time to discuss the financial aspects of medicine. The student will learn about HMOs, PPOs, IPAs, and other managed care entities. The student will learn what an ICD-9 code is and how to charge based on E&M and preventive health codes.
