The Methodist Charlton Family Medicine Residency Program is located in southwest Dallas, approximately 20 minutes from the center of Dallas, adjacent to the cities of Duncanville and DeSoto. The area is suburban and is characterized by gently rolling hills near Cedar Hill State Park and Joe Pool Lake. This community-based program is staffed by UT Southwestern faculty and family medicine residents. There are six family medicine residents per year, plus two sports medicine fellows, for a total of 20 residents at any one time.

Patients seen at the family practice clinic are fee-for-service. The patient population includes those with private insurance and entitlement programs (i.e., Medicaid and Medicare) as well as those without any insurance. Approximately 25% of the patients are under the age of 10 (ages 11-20, 15%; ages 21-35, 25%; ages 36-69, 25%; age 70 & up, 10%), 60% are female, and 40% are Caucasian (35% African-American, 20% Hispanic). Over 50 patients per day are seen in the family practice center. The family practice center admits to Charlton Methodist Hospital. Since the family medicine residency is the only training program at this hospital, admissions can be made to all services with consultation as needed.

Clerkship students spend time at the family practice center and in the office of a family physician who is in private practice. One half-day is spent doing exercise stress testing, one half-day working with sports medicine, and one day with hospice. There is no weekend call and no night-call. Students can volunteer to spend extra time with the sports medicine fellows (even attending high school and college games) and with hospice workers if they so desire.
