Baylor Family Medicine Residency program is located in a northeastern suburb of Dallas in the city of Garland, Texas. Garland is located about 20 miles from downtown Dallas and has a population of about 224,000 people. The residency program is located on the premises of the Baylor Medical Center of Garland and is part of a large healthcare system in North Texas, known as the Baylor Health Care System. This unopposed community based program accepts 6 residents per year for a total of 18 residents. An enthusiastic faculty consists of six full-time and two part-time Family physicians with broad interests including geriatrics, obstetrics, women's and adolescent health.
Patients seen at the residency clinic are generally funded with 20% being privately insured, 40% on Medicaid, 10% on Medicare, 15% being uninsured, and 15% with other forms of financial support. The number of patient visits to the clinic per day is about 50-60. Patients of all age groups are seen of which 25% are pediatric, 56% are adults ages 18-64 years and 19% are geriatric above 65 years of age. Patients belong to a diverse ethnic and cultural background of which 40% are white, 25% are black, 25% are Hispanic, and 10% are others.
Students rotating through this site will be exposed to a myriad of common and sometimes not so common medical problems in all age groups from newborn to geriatrics. Exposure to procedures like colposcopy, toenail removal, excision and biopsy of skin lesions, IUD placement, nasolaryngoscopy, etc. is offered. Students will spend most of their time seeing patients in the outpatient clinic with faculty and residents. They will also spend 2-3 days on our distinctive inpatient service. Opportunities exists for interested individuals to see patients at the wound care center and also during geriatric home visits.
Frequent dedicated didactics including Grand rounds, CPC, and lectures take place on a regular basis. Students will learn in a nurturing and caring environment.
