ERGO tag OGM1 Form Revisions Effective
Tuesday, December 09, 2008

Enhancements have been made to the ERGO system OGM1 web form (Proposal Review Certification Form). The modifications will help report Time and Effort (T&E) commitments of the Primary Investigator, Fellow, and each of the Key Persons anticipated for participation in the proposed grant. The information provided by these enhancements will enable Principal Investigators to better determine who may be available to participate in key roles on the grant and, in addition, to better determine their own level of commitment for the proposed application.

Furthermore, email notices will be automatically generated to each of the Key Persons named within the proposed grant. These notices will state to which current grants the Key Person is already committed and the amount of effort to which he/she is being asked to commit in the proposed grant. The named Key Persons will then be enabled to make a judgment regarding the availability of effort for the proposed grant and respond accordingly to the submitting PI.

The modifications which have been made to the OGM1 form do not remove any of the previous functions nor required data, but provide enhancements which compile the relevant T&E information. To access a User Guide which illustrates and explains those added features please click here.

For technical assistance with the ERGO OGM1 form, please contact:
Chris Perkins 214.648.3261 or Carl Campbell 214.648.7665.

Federal Agencies Converting Submission Forms from PureEdge to Adobe

The Age of Adobe forms is coming. Federal granting agencies plan to put all grant application packages into forms created by Adobe Systems software.

Because of the scale of this project and its technical requirements, conversion from PureEdge to Adobe will move forward in phases. Testing will occur during the Summer of 2008 and, as each becomes readied, agencies will progressively migrate to the new Adobe PDF format. Formal full  transition is scheduled to begin in December 2008 (see Timeline)

PureEdge Viewer will be phased out completely, and applicants will be required to download a compatible version of the Adobe Reader software from Grants.gov. By Spring of 2009, the Adobe PDF will be used in all Grants.gov application forms, including the training grants (T), career awards (K), and fellowships (F) application packages.

K Award Policy Change

On Thursday, NIH released a notice revising and expanding the policy concerning concurrent support from career development award and a research grant.  The notice states that "currently mentored K award recipients in the last two years of their support period are permitted to reduce the level of effort required for the K award and replace that effort with the effort on an NIH research grant or subproject provided that they remain in a mentored situation." The policy change "expands eligible grants to include research grants obtained from any Federal agency, clarifies when the research grant may be obtained relative to the years remaining on the K award, and clarifies that status as a PI on a multiple PI award also confers eligibility."

NIH Grant Cycle: Application to Renewal covers each step from mapping out your next ten years of research to renewing your funded grant. We answer your most critical application questions, including:

  • How much time should you allow?
  • How much work should you propose?
  • How do you balance time, money, and effort?
  • How much detail should you include?
  • Should you involve collaborators?
  • What should you do if you don't succeed?

Though much of our information and advice pertains to grantsmanship in general, the Cycle is written from an NIAID perspective. We share with you the knowledge and experience of NIAID staff, including former NIH grantees.

This new resource packs in even more guidance from senior-level scientists in the Institute, while incorporating four of our former All About Grants tutorials -- Application Basics, How to Plan an Application, How to Write an Application, and How to Manage Your Award.
