Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Diagnostic Evaluation - Urine Sample
You may also be asked to provide a urine sample for a urinalysis. The urinalysis is important since the presence of red or white blood cells in the urine indicates either the presence of an infection or the presence of another condition such as a stone, a tumor, or abnormalities requiring further investigation.
Your doctor may also ask you to void in a special machine that records the intensity of your urine stream. The graph shows the flow of urine over time. In the first case the urine is eliminated in just over 10 sec with a good flow rate. In the second example the flow is slower and it takes over 1 min to eliminate the urine. This is called a flow rate recording and helps urologists to objectively document how much your urination is impaired.
