Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
A medical history needs to be obtained since there are many other diagnoses and conditions that can mimic BPH. Such conditions include certain kinds of bladder cancer, stones in the urinary tract, abnormal function of the bladder muscle due to a neurological disorder, or diabetes mellitus, narrowings and scar tissue in the urethra and others.
There are also certain kinds of medications that you may take which can cause the same symptoms. Such medications are practically all over-the-counter cold, sinus, and/or allergy medications. These medications tend to contain pharmacologic agents which affect either the bladder muscle and its functioning or the function of the bladder outlet.
