Emergency Medical Technician Classes:
EMT classes consist of 21 days of classroom (7:30 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday) followed by hospital/ambulance rotations and the Texas Department of Health skills proficiency verification. Hospital/ambulance rotations consist of 1 24–hour shift on a Dallas Fire Department Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) and 5 8–hour shifts in Parkland Emergency Department and Labor & Delivery and Children's Medical Center Emergency Department. The Texas Department of State Health Services written exam will be administered following the last day of class. This class does not offer semester hour credit.
Paramedic Certificate Classes:
The Paramedic Certificate program is a 42 semester hour, 6-month program designed to prepare individuals to provide advanced prehospital care to emergency patients. Upon completion of the program, a certificate will be awarded. All applicants are required to successfully complete assessment testing in math and reading comprehension skills. Students enrolling in the program must have completed previous training as a Basic Emergency Medical Technician and have an adequate background in anatomy and physiology as verified by transcripted anatomy and physiology coursework or successfully passing the anatomy/physiology competency exam administered by the University of Texas Southwestern Emergency Medicine Education division.
