SOCIAL WORKER - Radiation Oncology
Going through radiation treatment can be a very stressful time physically, emotionally, and financially. Many patients facing this process will benefit from interaction with a social worker. A social worker is a trained, educated, and licensed professional that is held to a code of high ethical standards. A medical social worker is dedicated to helping patients and their families cope with the many problems that accompany illness or inhibit recovery and rehabilitation, such as economic need, disability, and lack of resources. They also collect and analyze patient information to help other health professionals understand the social, emotional, and environmental factors underlying a patient's condition, or affecting their optimal recovery. Medical social workers often coordinate services from home care and equipment, and may offer referral to rehabilitation and long-term care facilities. Medical social workers also provide referrals to hospice, as well as providing referral services and supportive counseling.
