Welcome to the Department of Psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas

A leading academic department devoted to improving the lives of people with mental illness through research, education, and clinical care.

Department Leadership and Administration

  • Chaired by Dr. Eric Nestler, the department's work is carried out by 175 regular faculty, 176 voluntary faculty, 241 staff and 155 trainees.

Research

  • The department supports major research programs in diverse areas, including depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, addiction, psychotherapy, family studies, brain imaging, molecular, cellular and systems neurobiology, and genetics.
  • It is housed in state-of-the-art clinical and basic research facilities comprising 100,000 square feet, with an additional 20,000 square feet currently under construction.
  • The department has more than $20 million per year in NIH-sponsored research, including five center or program grants and four institutional training grants.
  • The department has 16 endowed chairs and professorships, as well as two endowed centers and various other endowment funds.
  • The department receives another $5 million per year in research support from other sources (e.g. pharmaceutical companies, foundations, etc.)

Education

  • The department sponsors education programs geared toward psychiatry residents and fellows, medical students, clinical psychology graduate students, basic biomedical science graduate students, and postdoctoral research fellows.
  • The department's special research track for psychiatry residency training is supported by four institutional training grants from NIH.

Clinical Care

  • The department's outstanding patient care is carried out in diverse hospital settings, including University Medical Center Hospitals, Parkland Memorial Hospital, Dallas Veteran's Administration Hospital, Children's Medical Center of Dallas, Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas, and Terrell State Hospital.
  • The department has recently developed a new psychiatry clinic for adult, child and adolescent patients.
  • Ambulatory patients are also seen at our affiliated hospitals' psychiatry clinics and a host of specialty clinics.
  • The department collaborates with several local community agencies to provide care for the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area.
