Program Director:  Mustafa Husain, M.D.

Applications are now being accepted for a one-year advanced-residency training program in Geriatric Psychiatry. This clinically oriented program satisfies the prerequisites for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology's examination for Certification in the Subspecialty of Geriatric Psychiatry. Applicants must have successfully completed a four-year program in general adult psychiatry before entering the program. Three (3) residency positions are available, and while every consideration is given to our own UT Southwestern program graduates, all three slots are filled on a competitive basis.  Clinical experiences include inpatient care, outpatient care, home visits and hospital, consultation to non-psychiatric physicians, consultation to Adult Protective Services,  and nursing home consultation. Patient settings include both private and public sector facilities such as Walnut Place Nursing Home, Parkland Memorial Hospital and its outreach clinics, the Dallas VA Medical Center, Terrell State Hospital and UT Southwestern Alzheimer's Disease Center. Trainees participate in the evaluation and management of patients as part of geriatric assessment teams, in consultation with geriatric primary care providers and nursing home staff, and have direct patient care responsibilities.Research opportunities include Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), Magnetic Stimulation Therapy (MST), brain imaging such as MRI and SPECT, cognition-enhancing drugs, and behavioral and pharmacological interventions for behavioral disturbances in Alzheimer's disease and other dementing illnesses.

The present stipend is $53,884 per year. There are three weeks of paid vacation.

The Program Director is Mustafa M. Husain, M.D., Chief of the Geriatric Psychiatry Division at UT Southwestern and Chief of ECT Services at Parkland Memorial Hospital.
