 Psychiatry Education and Training
 Research Track

The Department of Psychiatry enormously values the unique perspective and understanding of the inner lives of psychiatric patients that is offered by psychoanalysis.

The Dallas Psychoanalytic Institute (http://www.dalpsa.org/index2.htm) is housed in the UTSouthwestern Department of Psychiatry Education Division and has all of its educational programs there.   All 28 of its faculty are active in teaching and supervising residents in didactics in all years of training.   All general psychiatry residents are required to have at least one year of psychotherapy supervision from a psychoanalyst.

Currently, 3 general psychiatry residents, one fellow and three junior faculty members are in training to become psychoanalysts.

The institute also gives courses for practicing psychotherapists in the community.   Two senior residents are allowed to take this course each year without tuition.
