The Psychosomatic Medicine Fellowship Program
The Psychosomatic Medicine Fellowship Program at UT Southwestern, ACGME accredited in 2007, provides trainees the opportunity to practice psychiatry in a population with comorbid mental and medical illness. As life expectancy continues to increase and sociopolitical forces limit availability of quality mental healthcare in the community, this ever-increasing patient population will demand the expertise of consult liaison psychiatrists for their management and treatment.
The UT Southwestern Psychosomatic Medicine Fellowship provides PGY5s with a rich clinical experience and academic environment in which to develop skills in consult liaison psychiatry. Psychosomatic medicine fellows provide leadership on interdisciplinary teams composed of residents, medical students, social work, and psychology. Fellows provide care to a wide variety of patients across UT Southwestern’s affiliated hospitals. Parkland Hospital, a public-funded county hospital and tertiary care center, serves a predominantly indigent population of Dallas County, allowing trainees to see patients on a variety of medical services and practice liaison within the context of a large hospital system. Consults at the VA North Texas Hospital and at Zale-Lipshy University Hospital broaden fellows’ exposure to special patient populations—namely, veterans at the former, and transplant and physical rehabilitation inpatients at the latter. These smaller hospital venues allow fellows more autonomy as a consultant and more direct liaison experience with attending physicians. Fellows also receive ambulatory care exposure during a weekly half-day clinic where they can provide ongoing psychiatric care to patients seen on the consult service after discharge.
Supervision is provided in the form of daily teaching rounds and formal weekly didactics. Informal supervision from consult service attendings are available at all times. Medical student and resident teaching is an important part of the fellowship. Fellows are also encouraged to develop specialized interests within consultation-liaison psychiatry and complete an academic or research project during their tenure with the program. Established clinical researchers throughout the department are open to mentoring, and collaborative efforts between fellows and faculty of other specialties is abundantly available.
The present stipend is $51,812 per year. Three weeks of paid vacation are included.
Admission criteria
Fellowship candidates must have satisfactorily completed an ACGME accredited psychiatry residency prior to entering the program. We accept two PGY-5 residents each year on a competitive basis. Eligibility for Texas medical licensure is a prerequisite for all candidates.
