The Department of Physiology is an integral component of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and is dedicated to its tripartite mission of education, research, and service. The Department strives for excellence in biomedical research and education to advance human health and welfare. Faculty, postdoctoral fellows, students, and staff are given opportunities to develop their full potential by effective mentoring and professional development programs.
The faculty in the Physiology Department conducts outstanding, cutting-edge research on fundamental questions that stimulate us to explore molecular structures and to study the fundamental functions of cells and tissues. There is also keen interest in the cellular and molecular basis of diseases and translation of our basic science research to develop novel therapeutic approaches. We have an integrated support system that helps all faculty members vigorously and successfully pursue extramural research funding opportunities. Results from our research are published in many distinguished scientific journals leading to national and international recognition for our contributions. Six of our faculty members are recognized by UT Southwestern Medical Center with endowed chairs or professorships.
Physiology represents a core discipline underlying biomedical sciences and clinical medicine. The faculty is expected to have significant participation and excellence in educating our trainees at all levels. Our faculty has major commitments to education in the Medical School, the School of Health Professions and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. They organize and teach in the Medical Physiology course for first year medical students as well as the Human Physiology course in the School of Health Professions. Our faculty members teach in the many courses offered in the Division of Basic Science of the Graduate School. In addition, they are active members of all eight graduate programs and several have leadership positions in the Graduate School. They are dissertation mentors for many Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. students and train postdoctoral scholars.
The members of the Department of Physiology consider our service mission as an opportunity. They serve at all levels in the institution, including chairs and members of standing committees for the President and Dean in addition to committees for the Six Year Planning process and academic accreditation. They are also active in scientific review panels and boards for the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, Muscular Dystrophy Association and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. They are editors and members of editorial boards for important scientific journals, and are routinely elected leaders of scientific meetings for FASEB and Gordon Conferences.
