About the Department
Gerontology emphasizes the multidisciplinary study of the processes of aging. The number of elderly persons is increasing and there is growing need for people to work in the field of aging. Opportunities are great to work directly with older adults in a variety of programs and services in the community or on behalf of older persons in areas such as advocacy, public policy, and research.
The Department of Gerontology offers individuals the opportunity to prepare themselves for careers with institutions, agencies and programs for the aged, as well as offering individuals the opportunity to prepare for further study in gerontology or related fields. The gerontology program provides college juniors and seniors the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in a setting which offers:
- A stimulating learning environment located in Dallas
- Small classes offering individual attention
- Many evening classes
- A first-rate library and computer lab
- Affordable tuition
The departmental curriculum includes coursework in social, psychological, economic and health aspects of aging as well as courses in policy and program service delivery. Special topics include gerotechnology, senior living industries, Alzheimer's disease, and applied research methodology. In addition, students participate in practica related to the course of study. Many agencies and institutions in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex offer internship experiences for students.
