Once you have decided to find out if  a cochlear implant is right for you the following will happen:

1. You call Aston Clinic to make a Cochlear Implant evaluation appointment, 214-648-3071 with Dr. Peter Roland.

2. On the first visit you will meet Dr. Roland and your Audiologist, Christy Powell.  You will receive an otological (ear) exam and a comprehensive hearing evaluation.  At this point it is decided whether or not you meet the Criteria for Admission to the Program.  If you do, you will be seen at Aston again as described below:

3. You will be scheduled for additional tests with Christy Powell, a 2-3 hour session at Aston Clinic.  At this session you will be given the opportunity to learn more about cochlear implants and get your questions answered.

4. Also during this time you will be scheduled and receive a test called an MRI.  This is done to give Dr. Roland a picture of the cochlea (the inner ear) and hearing nerve to help determine if you are a good candidate for implantation and if so, which ear to implant.

5.  A follow up visit with Dr. Roland is scheduled after your MRI for you and he to discuss whether to proceed with the implantation and to answer your questions.

6.  If you decide to proceed,  you now finalize which device you are going to get and the accessories that come with it.  You will be helped with this decision by a member of the team but the final decision will be yours.

7. Surgery is scheduled.

8.  Approximately one month after surgery (allowing time to heal) the outside part of the implant will be "turned on" and a "map" will be created for you. This is done with your Audiologist, Christy Powell, at Aston.

9.  These mapping visits will continue as needed.
