A suggested timeline for your research rotation is below. You should be starting this process mid third year and be ready to submit your IRB paperwork (if human subjects will be used) prior to the actual rotation. The IRB process can take many weeks and you can't start your research without their approval.  If you need help or have questions regarding the IRB please contact Barb Staves or click here.

PGY2 year:

Third and fourth quarters:

Think about a project

Identify a mentor

Quarterly informal discussions at Works in Progress

PGY3 year:

First quarter:

Perform literature review

Finalize research question

Present literature review at Works in Progress

Second quarter:

Formulate project proposal

Meet with biostatistician

            Complete department resources form

Present project proposal at Works in Progress

Third quarter:

Finalize protocol

Mentor includes resident in ERGO

Obtain IRB/IACUC approval—Barb Staves advises; complete by June 30th

Present final project proposal at Works in Progress

During the research rotation:

Written reports to the Research Committee at the end of the first month and the second month or presentations at Works in Progress

Presentation to Works in Progress during the third month

Submit a written report in scientific format to the Research Committee by the last day of the rotation:

                        Research committee accepts report or

Research committee does not accept the report, gives feedback and date for completion of new report

Close IRB protocol, if appropriate, at the end of the rotation

Attend all Research Committee meetings and Works in Progress presentations during rotation

Resident responsibilities:

Complete IRB/IACUC application and stipulations

Complete appropriate continuing review documentation in a timely fashion

Complete documentation for modifications, if needed

Keep all electronic files current with sponsor and Barb Staves (e.g. modifications, stipulations)

Close IRB/IACUC protocol by completion of residency and forward a copy of documents to Barb Staves—incorporate into final faculty review and resident checkout procedure for graduation

Resident cannot be the sole repository of all study documents

If a study cannot be closed by completion of residency:

Exit meeting with the Research Committee for approval of study to continue

Exit meeting with Barb Staves

Turn all original files and data over to Barb Staves

The project does not continue as a resident project (the new resident will not complete an IRB)

When presenting research talks at department conferences, submits a written paper in scientific format to the Research Committee due the day of presentation

Faculty mentor responsibilities:

Assist resident in finding a project

Guide literature search

Include resident in ERGO for project

Supervise completion of department resources form and IRB/IACUC paperwork

Review Works in Progress presentations

Schedule regular meetings to review progress

Review IRB stipulations, modifications, continuing review

Keep copies of all current documents (electronic)

Supervise study closure

In exceptional cases, be actively involved in transition process

PI Driven Projects:

Can involve residents who take on additional responsibility

Resident is the assistant—projects cannot be turned over to them
