I: Monthly Conferences

Staff: Department Faculty, Adjunct Faculty, Visiting Professors, and others as needed.
Schedule: Twelve times per year, first Friday of each month 8am 4 pm
Purpose: To provide continuing instruction through didactic lectures and case presentations, with ample opportunity for discussion, dialogue, and free exchange of ideas.
Methodology: Lectures by departmental faculty, faculty associates, Visiting Professors, adjunct faculty (pathology, radiology), and residents; patient presentations by residents with discussion by faculty and residents; presentation of research projects by residents and discussion by residents and faculty; review and discussion of papers and other writings not normally covered in journal club, focusing on a specific topic or area of the specialty.
Attendance: All Otolaryngology residents
II. Journal Club

Staff: entire faculty
Schedule: Twelve times per year, as part of the monthlyconference (1 1/2 hour per month) plus an additional hour on the following Tuesday
Purpose: To encourage journal reading and promote understanding of current otolaryngologic literature.
Methodology: Journals reviewed are Archives, Laryngoscope, Annals, and Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery for the previous month.; Additional articles from relevant journals are also discussed when provided in advance by the appropriate faculty. One half the time is devoted to review of articles dealing with otology (including neurotology) and pediatric otolaryngology, the remaining time to review of articles dealing with head and neck, rhinology, and other aspects of otolaryngology. Residents give their interpretation of articles, followed by comments and discussion by faculty. Special articles in other journals may be distributed by the relevant faculty prior to the conference for discussion in journal club.
Attendance: Attendance is mandatory for all residents.
III. Home Study Course
Director: John M. Truelson, MD
Staff: AAO-HNS
Schedule: Monthly throughout the year
Purpose: To supplement the basic and clinical knowledge of all residents through systematic study.
Methodology: The cost of enrollment in the AAO-HNS provided course is borne by the department. Residents read the material provided each month and complete the examination covering that material. Results are furnished to the department, and the progress of each resident monitored.
Attendance: Completion of the Home Study Course is mandatory for all Otolaryngology residents each year.
