HISTORY
Our residency program was founded in 1958 under the supervision of Dr. Claude Winborn, chief of the UT Southwestern Medical Center's Otolaryngology service in the Department of Surgery. The first graduate of the program was Dr. William Hale, who completed his residency in 1962. Under the leadership of Dr. William Meyerhoff, Otolaryngology became a department in its own right with Dr. Meyerhoff serving as chairman for nearly two decades.  More than 160 physicians have completed their training in the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery. In 2002, the department selected Dr. Peter Roland to replace the retiring  Meyerhoff thereby becoming only the second chairman in the department's history.

TODAY
Our residency program offers unmatched clinical and research opportunities. Residents at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center see patients at six hospitals in Dallas and Fort Worth, including Children's Medical Center Dallas, a world-renowned center for pediatric health care in general, and pediatric otolaryngology in particular. Together, the sixteen otolaryngology residents in our program carry out more than 8,000 surgical cases each year, including mandibular and thyroid surgeries.

In addition to these unique clinical opportunities, our residency program also caters to the aspiring academician. More than half of our graduating residents seek and obtain fellowships, while one quarter choose careers in academic medicine.

THE FACULTY
The  Faculty  of the department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, consists of 15 full-time physicians, five part-time physicians, 14 full-time audiologists, and 48 volunteers, as well as untold dozens of outside physicians who refer patients from all over the Dallas/Fort Worth community and beyond.
