Parkland Health & Hospital System

Parkland Health and Hospital System is the health care facility of the Dallas County Hospital District and is the principal teaching hospital for the medical school. The primary purpose, by law, of the Dallas County Hospital District is to provide medical care for the indigent population of Dallas County. At the present time, Parkland has approximately 900 beds, excluding infant bassinets, 371 of these beds are designed for surgical services. The surgical beds have an occupancy of over 90%. Approximately 180,000 emergency room visits are logged yearly. There are over 300,000 outpatient visits per year.

At Parkland, the resident is introduced to the core curriculum in orthopaedic surgery and has junior resident responsibilities on one of the six major orthopaedic services. Trauma and the treatment of sequelae of trauma are emphasized. Approximately 50% of the orthopaedic admissions at Parkland Hospital are emergent and 50% are elective. Orthopaedic education is best taught by experts in the area of orthopaedics.

Consequently there are large numbers of specialty clinics within the program. At Parkland Health and Hospital System there are Hip, Knee, Trauma, Foot, Spine, Hand, and Children's Fracture Clinics. 

Children's Medical Center
The Children's Medical Center is a 168 bed pediatric hospital with a very active neonatal and pediatric surgical service. The Children's Medical Center pediatric musculoskeletal trauma is covered by inhouse care every fifth or sixth night.
Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children
The full range of neuromuscular skeletal disorders affecting the child is covered at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children. There are five full-time pediatric orthopaedic surgeons directing the activities of the resident at Scottish Rite.
Veteran's Administration Medical Center
The Veteran's Administration Medical Center is the primary hospital for the resident's education in reconstruction and general elective orthopaedic surgery. The V. A. Medical Center has a total bed capacity of 700 beds, of which 273 are designated as surgical beds. The resident has full patient responsibilities for various specialty clinical and is supported by the full-time faculty. At the V. A. Medical Center, there are weekly Amputee, Foot, Knee, Hip, Spinal Problem, and Hand Clinics.
University Hospital - Zale Lipshy
University Hospital is a 160 bed tertiary referral hospital for treatment of private patients of faculty.
Norfolk & Norwich Hospital, Norwich, England
The senior level resident serves a three month rotation as a senior registrar working in the National Health System under the guidance of five outstanding orthopaedic consultants. The program is affiliated with St. Bartholomew,s Hospital in London.
University Hospital - St. Paul Hospital & Baylor University Medical Center
Other rotations are based at St. Paul Hospital and Baylor University Medical Center. These hospitals have large private elective orthopaedic services. The resident is exposed to a very large number of athletic injuries in these services as well as the entire spectrum of orthopaedic and rehabilitation.
