Hospitals Affiliated with the Residency Program
- Parkland Heath and Hospital System
- Parkland Health and Hospital System is the health care facility of the Dallas County Hospital District and is the principal teaching hospital for the medical school. The primary purpose, by law, of the Dallas County Hospital District is to provide medical care for the indigent population of Dallas County. At the present time, Parkland has approximately 968 beds, excluding infant bassinets, 371 of these beds are designed for surgical services. The surgical beds have an occupancy of over 90%. Approximately 150,000 emergency room visits are logged yearly. There are over 800,000 outpatient visits per year.
At Parkland, the resident is introduced to the core curriculum in orthopaedic surgery and has junior resident responsibilities on one of the five major orthopaedic services. Trauma and the treatment of sequelae of trauma are emphasized. Approximately 50% of the orthopaedic admissions at Parkland Hospital are emergent and 50% are elective. Orthopaedic education is best taught by experts in the area of orthopaedics.
Consequently there are large numbers of specialty clinics within the program. At Parkland Hospital there are Hip, Knee, Trauma, Foot, Spine, Hand and Children's Fracture Clinics. The resident at Parkland is on call every fourth night.
- Children's Medical Center

CMC is private, not-for-profit, and is one of the largest pediatric healthcare providers in the nation. As the only academic healthcare facility in North Texas dedicated exclusively to the comprehensive care of children from birth to age 18, Children's provides a large range of patient care. As the primary pediatric teaching facility for The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, the medical staff at Children's conducts research that is instrumental in developing treatments, therapies, and greater understanding of pediatric diseases.
Children's is licensed for 411 beds and has more than 50 subspecialty programs. The hospital is the only designated Level I trauma center for pediatrics in the Southwest.
- Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children
- The full range of neuromuscular skeletal disorders affecting the child is covered at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children. There are five full-time pediatric orthopaedic surgeons directing the activities of the resident at Scottish Rite.
- Veteran's Administration Medical Center
- The Veteran's Administration Medical Center is the primary hospital for the resident's education in reconstruction and general elective orthopaedic surgery. The V.A. Medical Center has a total bed capacity of 700 beds, of which 273 are designated as surgical beds. The resident has full patient responsibilities for various specialty clinical and is supported by the full-time faculty. At the V.A. Medical Center, there are weekly Amputee, Foot, Knee, Hip, Spinal Problem and Hand Clinics.
- University Hospital - Zale Lipshy
- University Hospital is a 160 bed tertiary referral hospital for treatment of private patients of faculty. A single resident rotates at this facility and is integrally involved in all aspects of patient care.
- Norfolk & Norwich Hospital, Norwich, England
- The senior level resident serves a three month rotation as a senior registrar working in the National Health System under the guidance of five outstanding orthopaedic consultants. The program is affiliated with St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London.
- University Hospital - St. Paul Hospital
- Other rotations are based at St. Paul Hospital. This hospital has a private elective orthopaedic services. The resident is exposed to a very large number of athletic injuries in these service. The resident is exposed to a very large number of joint reconstruction surgeries.
