Zale Lipshy University Hospital is a 152-bed facility near the South Campus. Opened in late 1989, it provides a central location to hospitalize private patients referred to UT Southwestern faculty members.
This rotation exposes the resident to the private practice side of oral and maxillofacial surgery. During this rotation, the resident is the right-hand to the UTSWMC faculty. Most of the private surgery cases on adults from the faculty practice are operated at this hospital. The resident performs the duties of an associate. Residents spend an average of 3 months over their entire program at this facility.
We instituted this rotation in 1990 to give the resident in their last year a taste of private practice. They essentially function as an associate of the faculty. They become involved in seeing new patients with the faculty members, helping with the surgery, and seeing them postoperatively. A great amount of orthognathic and TMJ experience is gained on this rotation. The faculty involved in this rotation are Drs. Zuniga ,Ellis, Walker, Schwartz-Dabney, Sakamoto and Finn.
